PLACEPALAYAM-GUDIYAM CAVES





Gudiyam pre-historic Caves


Gudiyam Caves, about 17 kms. behind Poondi reservoir is one of the places to visit near Chennai. Hey, don’t you get all romantic and imagine a boisterous picnic with friends and booze.


Drive nearly 55 kms. from Chennai to Poondi, cross the dam, take the road which goes to Place Palayam (that’s the last village on the Andhra-Tamilnadu border) and then drive 11 kms., take diversion to the right, follow the lane and you reach Gudiyam village. From there hire a local guide for a small sum. There are other smaller caves high up in the hillsides.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN

1. A Route Map is essential

2. The Team should consist of at least 10 persons

3. Carry Drinking Water as much as you can.

4. It is very hot there. So carry some Sun-block cream.

5. Carry sufficient Food - like biscuits, banana, chocolates, bread etc.

6. Get into a Trekking Dress - Pants, full-sleeve shirt, shoes, cap, shoulder bag etc. The pathway is full of pebbles. Thorny bushes will be there on both sides.

7. Be prepared for a long walk through a forest.

8. At the same time, carry minimum load. Otherwise it will be heavy to walk.

9. Engage a local guide.

10. Avoid rainy season and severe summer.

11. In between the starting point and the cave there is no shelter.

12. Avoid early morning and late evening.
